TGI’s Newest Grants Signal Diverse Funding Sources

 June 7th, 2010

Kay Coles James (right), TGI President, receives words of praise from Robert Woltz (left), President of Verizon Virginia, during a jointly sponsored press conference in MarchRICHMOND -- The Gloucester Institute is the fortunate recipient of three major fundraising grants this summer that have helped fund the Institute’s programming. These grants include $300,000 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, $50,000 from State Senator Jeff McWaters, $25,000 from the Altria Group, and $7,500 from Erickson Retirement Group.

This funding, signifies the broad range of support TGI receives for its work. In addition to supporting our programs, this funding will also go towards the renovations of the Moton Conference Center.

Kay Coles James, President of TGI, said this funding will “play a significant role in supporting our programming, which focuses on nurturing young people and developing emerging leaders through education, training and real life experience, while also supporting our renovation projects.” James added that these investments in TGI will allow us to prepare America’s “future problem solvers.”

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s grant is part of their American Healing project which supports programs that promote racial healing and address racial inequity. This program awarded grants to 119 organizations from 29 states and Washington, D.C. and aims to improve life outcomes for vulnerable children and their families by promoting racial healing and eliminating barriers to opportunities.

The Altria Group supports organizations and programs that emphasize young people’s strengths, promotes positive behaviors, connects youth with caring adults and enhances community-based resources for kids.

Jeff McWaters, a former executive at Amerigroup and now a state senator from Virginia, donated $50,000 to TGI – the third installment of a $150,000 gift to the Institute. McWaters has been a longtime friend of The Gloucester Institute and a strong supporter of the work being achieved at the Moton Conference Center.

Finally, Erickson Retirement’s corporate mission is to create an environment where the miracle of life is celebrated. This is evident in the quality and success of their communities as well as their support of worthwhile causes like The Gloucester Institute.

These new resources are vital to the goals and mission of The Gloucester Institute and TGI is very grateful for their generosity and confidence in our work.
