Background: Holly Knoll is the Georgian style retirement home of the late Dr. Robert Russa Moton. The home is located in Gloucester County, Virginia, on the banks of the York River, in the area known as Cappahosic. Dr. Moton retired to Holly Knoll after serving for more than fifty years at Hampton and Tuskegee Institutes.
Dr. Moton’s retirement at Holly Knoll was far from quiet. His famous invitation, “Come to Cappahosic,” brought many friends and fellow citizens from near and far to discuss and resolve problems, particularly in the field of education. Everyone at Holly Knoll regardless of philosophical leaning, was treated as an equal. Any idea offered with the sincere mission of improving the lives of African Americans was considered.
Mission:
Through the restoration and maintenance of the historic property at Holly Knoll, The Gloucester Institute provides an intellectually safe environment where ideas can be discussed and transformed into practical solutions that produce results, and a site to train and nurture emerging leaders.
Goal: Our goal is to restore the Holly Knoll property in such a way that all six programs can be run effectively and economically from the Moton Conference Center.
Objective:
Our objective is to maintain a consistent eighty percent usage rate for programs and twenty percent for upkeep, maintenance, and private use of the foundation at Holly Knoll.
Capacity: Holly Knoll and Moton Conference Center can accommodate 60 guests with spaces for training sessions, meetings and events. The property maintains recreational spaces for swimming, tennis, fishing, and boating and provides a beautiful setting for the programs run by The Gloucester Institute including casual gatherings and special events. |
